About me

Hey, everyone, I'm Olga and I'm here to help you on your journey through the world of art materials and acrylic painting.

Artist Olga Soby. Smart Art Materials Just like you, I'm super passionate about visual and fine arts, and acrylic paint as a medium is one of my favorites. I truly believe that there is a creative spark in every single one of us, whether it's a passion for artistry or photography, scientific discoveries, engineering achievements, the development of Internet technology, film directing and much more. And it's very important to grow this little spark and develop yourself in the niche, where your heart belongs.

You are never too young or too old to start!

On this website, I want to help everyone to build a solid foundation of necessary knowledge about acrylic painting materials and tools. I will be giving you my personal recommendations and tips. Also, I will help you to set your workspace and choose all the right supplies.

I love to talk about art and creativity! So if you have anything interesting that you want to share or any opinions of any of the content I have created on my site, please do speak up. I love feedback in every form.

Now to me and my journey through the art of painting...

One of my early paintings; first attempts to use a painting knife

I was born and raised in Ukraine and immigrated to Canada at age of 20. Right now I live with my husband in the beautiful city of Victoria - the capital of British Columbia. I have always been attracted to art as a kid and teenager, but I never took it seriously as I was taught by my parent and probably society that each and every person supposed to get a "serious profession" and "real job", and painting doesn't qualify under any of these categories...

Nevertheless, at age of 18-19, I start to realize that this is what I really like to do. The first time I took myself into painting "for real" was only when I moved to Canada. I started with simple sketches and first attempts to use paints. And fairly quickly I realized that the process of drawing and painting doesn't only bring me joy, but also allows to express myself, my ideas, not to mention the pleasure to see the resulting picture.

Study, practice, rinse, repeat

My Marilyn Monroe - was drawn during my first drawing course.

I don't have any formal art education, and honestly, thanks to the accessibility of information, I don't think it's still mandatory for the artists. I'm not saying that you don't need to educate yourself, because you really do, but you just don't need to pay thousands of dollars for that anymore.

So when I realized how much I love to paint, I began to take different courses, study history of art, learned about existing painting techniques etc... And I highly recommend to all of you to set aside some time to study the basic principles and theories. Inter alia composition, color theory, and basic techniques, which are the subject of some articles on my website.

Fire Poppies by Olga Soby
I've always had a passion for poppies

Throughout the years, I’ve dug deeper into many art themes, and tried and compared A LOT of different paints, brushes, surfaces, and other tools. In the beginning, it was very difficult to figure things out. I think you know that feeling when you walk into the art store and just get lost in the plenty of items. Everything looks so nice and cool, and you get so excited and literally want to buy EVERYTHING! And you end up buying things you don't even really need. Sounds familiar? You bet! I know how frustrating it is not to know what is right for you, and what materials and tools you need to work in the selected style, or to achieve the desired effect.

While I have been through my own “trial and error” experiments, I formulated my "must have" and "must know" lists. And this is when the idea of this website was born. I realized how amazing it would be to share the knowledge and skills I've got with painting beginners who just like me didn't get a chance to get formal painting education.

The best part about painting...

For me, the best part about painting is that I can implement my interests and passions in my artworks. For example, I'm really into Yoga and Hinduism, thus it has been a favorite subject of my latest paintings:

    Hi Olga,

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent indulging in your site.
I am grateful to have found some very expert advice on the use of acrylic paints and I’m anxious to experiment on my own!

I am a life long dabbler with oils, as my mother and father both painted with oils. I’m feeling the need to travel away from my ordinary landscapes and be brave with a new medium and an entirely different style.

Thanks Olga! Your web site is a joy.

    Hi Olga,

Just like you, I love art. But, I am not very good at it. My pictures on the canvas don’t seem to reflect the pictures in my mind.

I have always been afraid of using acrylic paint even though I have wanted to. Most of my pictures end up blurred and splotched.

So, I have resigned myself to charcoal sketching. But, I am encouraged after reading about you. I think you may be able to guide me to the best sources to increase my knowledge and abilities to use acrylic paints. I really do want to create more colorful representations of my imagination.

By the way, I really love your Om Mandala! Are you planning on selling some of your works on your website?

    Marty

Hi Marty, thank you so much for your comment! I’m happy to hear I’ve given you some inspiration to give another try to acrylics. You know, I think at the beginning it’s not as much about result but more about the process, it has to be a joy. And the more you practice, the more satisfied you will be with your painting.

Thank you, I’m actually planning to start selling some of my artworks on this website, so stay posted)))
